In mid-January a Buzzfeed article entitled “That Weird Glamour Shot Selfie App You’re Seeing Is Called Meitu” discussed a “bump in popularity” for the selfie app Meitu.

In the midst of this boom, Dr. Crystal Abidin (wishcry), an ethnographer of digital culture wrote a blog post called: MeituXiuxiu, Cultural diffusion, and Asia Exotica. In the post Abidin writes about the app’s original purposes, filters, and Chinese-roots. In doing so, she draws connections to intercultural dialogue, selfies, and the “virality of the ‘hand-drawn selfie’ feature of the app.
